Willman travelled once a year over a period of 6 years to visit with PW Botha. Much vilified for his strong hand in politics during the years of Apartheid. PW Botha lived out his final years along the Garden Route in private with his second wife Barbara Botha.
Two months before he passed this image was taken during a heart to heart conversation about the past, about things that could have been done better and things he went to the grave convinced of.
This one of one hand printed portrait details a complicated man at a time in his life where a conversation was had whether he should write an autobiography. My answer to him was always the same, “Mr President, your silence has always been your strength.”
P W Botha never wrote that book. Two months later he was dead.
